Navigating EEO-1 Reporting for 2024

Employers with 100 or more employees (during any point of the 4th Quarter) and federal contractors with at least 50 employees need to start preparing their EEO-1 component 1 filing. The EEOC portal will open on April 30th, 2024 and the deadline to file is June 4th, 2024.

Step 1 - Choose a Reporting Date:

Select a date between October 1 and December 31, 2023, as your "workforce snapshot period." This date will be the basis for reporting all employees.

Step 2 - Ensure Job Title Alignment:

Make sure your job titles are categorized correctly according to the EEO's job categories, for example: executives, first/mid-level managers, professionals, technicians, sales workers, administrative support workers, craft workers, operatives, laborers, and service workers.

Step 3 - Employee Self-Identification:

Offer employees the opportunity to self-identify their sex and race/ethnicity. Provide clear instructions and assure them of the voluntary nature of the inquiry.

The racial and ethnic categories should align with EEOC guidelines. Click below to view categories.

Step 4 - Designate a Point of Contact:

Assign an employee as the "account holder" responsible for filing the report through the the EEO-1 Component 1 Online Filing System (OFS). Ensure they understand the process and their responsibilities.

Account holders must submit the workforce demographic data electronically in the OFS through either manual data entry or data file upload. Also, the employer’s certifying official must then certify the EEO-1 Component 1 report(s) in the OFS.

Step 5 - File on Time:

Submit your report by June 4, 2024, or earlier to avoid potential system slowdowns closer to the deadline. Plan ahead to address any technical challenges and avoid the need for extensions, as they are typically not granted by the EEOC.

With the EEO-1 reporting season approaching, adherence to guidelines and timely action are critical. By implementing the five-step strategy outlined above, employers can navigate the process efficiently and ensure accurate reporting of workforce demographics to meet regulatory requirements.
